1924

Jan 4th

0700 shoved off from wall and proceeded to Dry Dock at Kowloon.

Feb 2nd

0800 proceeded to No 1 buoy.  1630 sailed for Singapore.

Feb 7th

0900 arrived Singapore.  Weather lovely.  Petersfield, Carlisle, Bluebell and St Breock in company.

Feb 10th

Special Service Squadron arrived.  Hood, Repulse, Delhi, Danae, Dunedin, Dauntless, Dragon at 1030.

Feb 11th

Dress ship overall.  Hood saluted C-in-C China, GOC Governor.  Fleet gave Searchlight display.

Feb 12th

Spasm 0100, SS Talma on fire.  Hood saluted Sultan of the Unfederated Malay States.

Feb 14th

Fleet gave searchlight display.

Feb 15th

Route march through main streets of Singapore.

Feb 17th

1015 1st LCS proceeded.   1030 Battle cruisers proceeded for Australia.  Dragon remained behind to bury a marine, sailing at 1830.

Proceeded to sea for Gunnery exercises, retur

Feb 19th

Petersfield and Bluebell proceeded to Batavia.  More exercises.

Feb 20th

Titania, Marazion and S/M arrived.  1530 Hawkins sailed for Batavia.  1915 stopped ship to allow King Neptune’s Herald come on board.

Feb 21st

His Majesty King Neptune arrived on board and held his Court at 0930 and all novices were duly initiated into the mysteries of the deep.  Lovely weather now south of the equator.  Usual fun took place.  Admiral Leveson was presented with the Order of Ancient Seadog and Capt Alvington with the Order of the Tropical Kipper.

Feb 22nd

0800 arrived and anchored off Tandjong Priok, about 10 miles from Town of Batavia.  Usual saluted [sic].

Feb 25th

British Community entertained 300 men in Deca Park.  Plenty of drinks, smokes and refreshments.  Played football, lost 3-2.  Weather glorious.

Feb 26th

Landed at 0530.  Party of 260 proceeded by train to Buitenzorg, in the mountains about 50 miles inland.  Lovely health resort and Botanic Gardens.  Arrived back on board about 1330.  Sight not to be missed.  Visited Museum.

Feb 29th

0645 sailed for Sourabaya.

March 1st

Arrived 1000.  Lovely weather, very hot.  Anchored about ¾ mile off Custom Jetty.  Town about 3 miles inland.

March 4th

Dutch entertained party 250 [sic] to cinema and football.  Not too good.

March 5th

British Community entertained.  Great success.

March 7th

Sailed 0730 for Singapore.  Good weather.

March 9th

Arrived Singapore 1420.

March 10th and 11th

Gunnery exercises and Torpedo Running.

March 12th

0700 sailed in company with Carlisle.  Good weather, exercises carried out.

March 14th

0330 anchored, 0600 weighed and proceeded up river.  1100 secured alongside MM Dockyard jetty.  Saluted country, British and French consuls, also Governor General at 1630.  Splendid weather, too hot.  Saigon about 40 miles up river, not very wide, all marshes and forests of undergrowth.

March 15th

11 pm saw Dragon Dance.  Very queer native dance like a Carnaval [sic].

March 22nd

1400 slipped and proceeded.  Good weather.

March 24th

0425 anchored at sea 18 miles from Paknum on account of shallowness of water.  Bangkok about one hour run by train from Paknum.  Liberty men landed.  0600 struck flag of C-in-C.

March 27th

Dressed ship overall, manned ship for King of Siam who came on board just before noon.  Had a march past, Inspection of Ship, fired torpedo and mine and a Salvo.  1300 King returned on board yacht.  1400 weighed and proceeded under lee of the land, 1600 anchored.  2000 King, and Ladies and Gentlemen came on board for dinner[5].

March 30th

1400 sailed from Bangkok.

April 1st

1710 arrived Singapore.

April 2nd

Sailed 1600.

April 3rd

0705 arrived Port Swettenham.  Secured No 2 buoy.

April 6th

Visited Kuala Lumpur, 1½ hours by train, landed 0630.  Motor car ride, good look round tin mine, rubber plantation and Batu Caves.  Dinner at Railway Hotel.

April 10th

Sailed at 1610.  Good weather.

April 11th

Arrived 0645 at Singapore.  Oiled and provisioned.

April 12th

Sailed 2145 for Miri.  Quiet and good trip.

April 14th

Anchored 0610 off Kuching River, transferred Admiral and staff to Petersfield, who proceeded to Kuching and Sarawal.  We weighed 1230 and proceeded to Miri.

April 15th

Arrived Miri, oiled ship.

April 16th

Sailed for Labnan and arrived at 1530.

April 17th and 18th

Inter port boat race.

April 20th

Final Boat Race.  Stokero won.  Admiral and staff arrived on board 1700.  Sailed from Labaan – good trip.

April 24th

Arrived Hong Kong.

April 27th and 28th

24 hours general leave given.  Weather very wet.  Was very queer with enteritis all the time at HK.  Finished up with very bad cold.

May 19th

Left Hong Kong.

May 22nd

2300 Arrived Wei Hai Wei.  Weather much colder.  Up to 28th we done [sic] little Gunnery and torpedo practice.

May 24th and 26th

Dressed ship for Empire Day and Queen’s Birthday respectively.

May 28th

Went ashore to mainland at 1600 and stopped at Clark’s Hotel till arrival of steamer.

May 29th

Went on board SS Fausang 0500.  Arrived Chafor at 0900.  Bob and I visited Chinese prison, bought cane chairs.  Took Gracie and Geoff[6] swimming in the evening.

May 30th

Visited Cemetery and attending service at 1000 in St Andrew’s Cemetery for American Independence Day.  After Tiffin took Gracie to school and had a long walk on my own.  All went swimming at 1800, passed evening at Mrs Claytons.

May 31st

Aunt E[7] and I visited Mrs Millbank before Tiffin.  Had look over English prison.  Quiet afternoon’s sleep, pleasant evening.  Mrs and Mrs Millbank and Mr and Mrs Clayton came, played Mah Jong and Auction Bridge.  Swimming at 1700.

June 1st

Stroll before breakfast.  Bob and Gracie took the ponies out for a run.  Rest in afternoon, swimming at 1800, visited boat club in evening.

June 2nd

Lovely weather.  All came to see me off, sailed at 1030 in SS Fansang.  Arrived on board 1500.

June 3rd

Dressed ship King’s Birthday [sic].  Review and march past on mainland.  OAG and Capt Hopwood took the Salute.

June 9th

C-in-C arrived back from Pekin.

June 23rd

Dressed ship Coronation Day [sic].  Fired Salute.

June 26th

Admiral Washington arrives [sic] 1800.  Dined with Admiral.

July 1st

Hawkins done [sic] C-in-C’s Competitive shoot and won Shield.

July 7th

Rifle meeting.  Had a good week, managed to win $15 pool shooting.

July 10th

USS Uron and Gen Alara arrived.

July 11th

Lady Leveson presented prizes to winners at Rifle meeting.  Huron sailed.

July 28th and 29th

Regatta.  Great sport.  Won Yoky bowl.

Aug 2nd

Final WHW Shield versus Submarines.  Won 2-nil.

Aug 5th and 6th

Athletic Sports.

Aug 11th

Marathon Race for Titania Cup.  Diomede 1st, Hawkins 2nd.  Hard lines.

Aug 12th

Admiral Frochet in Jules Ferry arrived 1000.  C-in-C’s dinner party.

Aug 13th

Japanese Admiral Nomura in HIJMS Tone arrived 1700.

Aug 15th

0600 Tone sailed.

Aug 16th

Sailing Race C-in-C’s Cup.  Lt Cdr Hutton Hawkins won [sic].

Aug 18th

Chef and PO’s Smoking Concert at Queen’s Hall.  French Cruiser sailed.

Aug 19th

Hawkins Training Class.  Firing.

Aug 20th

Proceeded to sea, all LCs Titania and Bluebell in Company.  Exercises 1100.

Aug 21st

Arrived 1450 at Tsingtao.

Aug 22nd

Saluted Governor and Chinese RA.

Aug 23rd

Went ashore.  Good walk.

Aug 24th

Foxglove arrived with RAY.

Aug 25th

0930 sailed for Wei Hai Wei.  Splendid weather.

Aug 26th

0850 arrived WHW.

Aug 29th

1830 sailed for Fuson in company with Carlisle.

Aug 30th

0720 arrived and sailed again at 2100 as soon as British Ambassador arrived on board.  Leave to ROs and Chief POs only.

Sept 3rd

1000 arrived Yokohama.  Saluted country and Japanese Admiral of Nagoto, 17 guns.  Lying in Tateyama Bay.  Weather fine.

Sept 5th

Went to Kamakura, rather wet.  Landed 0800, returned 2200.  Visited sacred island of Enoshina.

Sept 7th

Landed in Yokohama, good walk round.  Wonderful recovery, thousand wooden huts and temporary shops erected.  Trams running, also trains.  Post office large wooden building 2 minutes’ walk from landing jetty.

Sept 9th

1700 sailed.  Very windy.  Japanese 1st Sea Lord lunched with Admiral.  Good trip.

Sept 11th

0900 arrived at Kagoshima, much rain.  Delayed sailing through rough weather reported.

Sept 12th

Sailed for Wei Hai Wei at 0600.  Weather good, occasional rains, windy.

Sept 14th

Arrived at WHW.

Sept 25th

1400 sailed for Chefoo in s/m L19, arrived at 1715, met Bob.  Had good time.

Sept 27th

1800 returned in Petersfield.

Oct 19th

1200 sailed from WHW.

Oct 20th

0610 arrived Taku, anchored 12 miles from Forts.  Admiral proceeded to Tientsin in Foxglove thence to Pekin.  War prevalent in vicinity.

Oct 23rd

Pekin surrounded, Admiral stranded.

Oct 25th

Military communication established,

Oct 29th

Admiral returned, sailed for WHW.

Oct 30th

Arrived WHW.

Oct 31st

Sailed.

Nov 3rd

Arrived Hong Kong.

Nov 13th

Admiral Everett arrived on P&O Malwa.

Nov 15th

Flag of VA hoisted in Diomede at 0810.  Flag of Admiral Leveson struck on HMS Hawkins at sunset.

Nov 16th

VA Flag hoisted in Hawkins.

Nov 19th

Sailed from Hong Kong.

Nov 23rd

Arrived off Taku Bar.

Nov 24th

Admiral left Taku in Marazion for Tientsin and Pekin.

Nov 29th

Admiral returned on board.  Sailed from Taku.

Nov 30th

Arrived WHW.

Dec 4th

Sailed.

Dec 6th

Arrived Shanghai.

Dec 12th

Arrived Hong Kong and commenced refit.
